Renting an apartment might be cheaper than buying a home, but there are benefits to homeownership beyond having a place to live. Today, I’m going to give you some key points that highlight the potential benefits of homeownership:

1. Wealth through equity. Renting an apartment is cheaper and offers more flexibility, but the money paid towards rent is essentially gone. Buying a house, on the other hand, allows you to build equity over time. This means that the value of your property increases along with your net worth. Imagine buying a house, and after five years, inflation spikes. Automatically, the value of your home jumps from $200,000 to $250,000. Even though you still owe money on the mortgage, you have $50,000 in equity.

2. Think long-term. Thinking of paying for your home for a long time might seem like too much at first, but over time, it becomes a familiar expense. Being consistent with payments is a good thing, especially when you retire and have your mortgage paid off—you’ll have a place to call your own. More than that, you can also have the option to buy another property and continue paying for the new house, while leveraging the other property as a rental, earning you passive income. You’ll have the freedom to dictate the price depending on the neighborhood and the current affordability rate of the area.

3. Legacy through property. For some people, like me, passing down a paid-off property to children or loved ones is a more valuable and secure asset than cash, which can be mishandled.

Of course, there are challenges to homeownership. Not everyone has a perfect credit score or the cash to make a down payment. The good news is that there are programs and strategies that make it possible for those who are interested to become homeowners. It’s just a matter of perspective and looking beyond the immediate costs and sacrifices.
